Trent Consultants News Virtual Reality Games Could Help Bullying Victims

Trent Consultants News Children who took part in a three-week anti-bullying virtual learning intervention in schools in the UK and Germany showed a 26% decrease in victimisation.

In the study, published in The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Maria Sapouna and Professor Dieter Wolke from Warwick Medical School and the Department of Psychology at the University of Warwick led a team of researchers to examine the effects of an anti-bullying virtual learning intervention called FearNot!

The team recruited 1, 129 children aged between eight and nine from 27 primary schools across the UK and Germany. They split the children into intervention and control groups. The intervention group took part in three sessions, interacting individually with the FearNot! software. Each session lasted around 30 minutes over a three-week period. The children were assessed on self-report measures of victimisation before and after the intervention.

The software was a virtual school with 3D pupils who assumed the roles that children take when bullying occurs, either as the bully, victim or bystander. These characters were then used to improvise real-life bullying incidents and pupils could interact with the characters and suggest ways to cope with or resolve the situation. Although the effect was only short-term, researchers suggest longer interventions could have a more sustained impact.

Professor Wolke said this was the first study to investigate the efficacy of a virtual learning intervention for victims of bullying. He said: "We found that the FearNot! intervention significantly increased the probability of victims escaping victimisation, especially among those children who interacted with the characters more and explored the advice. The effects we found were only short-term, but we believe a longer term intervention integrated in the curriculum would be more beneficial.

"Our findings suggest for the intervention to be effective, they need to be of appropriate duration and include booster episodes over time. Virtual interventions could be most effective as part of a wider anti-bullying curriculum." Adapted from materials provided by University of Warwick.

why are people so mean?
I've been reading things about bullying an cyber bullying like amanda todd and other things, and I can't help wondering, WHY ARE PEOPLE SO MEAN, it's really rare to find someone who really truly is nice, I mean can't they just at least keep their thoughts to themselves, why, why, why. It just is really sad, we are far from being perfect, really far. I've been bullied, thankfully not like poor Amanda but still bullied, I've been told '' go suicide, your useless, and ugly, you don't belong in this world''. It makes me sick, it disgusts me, I get so frustrated and sad, I cut myself. Anyways, I also wanted to ask; Why didn't people AT LEAST help the poor girl? I'm not being a kiss ass but still WHY????? It makes me sad knowing that a girl had to face more than miserable, horrible things in her life that she had to end it. Please take this seriously because it really is. Thank you for your understanding.

Is Bullying ALWAYS The Bully's Fault?
When I was in 6th grade, I witnessed my friend get bullied by a new student. She was a girl who was way bigger than him, he was small and short. She would hit him and call him names. But he would always say something to her, knowing she would hit him in response. There has been multiple times where she would just hit him for no reason. Although it's her fault for victimizing him, is bullying sometimes the victims fault? They talked after she had come out of a jail for her behavior, he told her she ruined his life, made him depressed and want to die. But next year in 7 grade they were in separate classes, and the feud ended. But in 8 grade, they were in the same class and her character completely changed. She was so nice and happy, everyone started to like her. But he would always bother, but she didn't say anything or do anything to harm him. But, she hit him really badly and he got all sad and his family called the police on her. The school moved their classes, and that was that. But This story makes me wonder, do some bully victims like being victims? Is it always the bully's fault? If she made him so depressed, why would he trigger it? Please share your stories

Will the school try to figure out that I made the fake email?
So I created a fake email under the name of this boy I hate. He has bullied me for. Long time so I wanted revenge. I sent an email from his account posing as him to a teacher he has. The first email I set said something like "do I still have to do this project?" Then she replied and said "yes I recommend you do it on your day off." To make her mad I sent back "why do I have to waste my day off on this stupid thing?" And she didn't reply. Well just now before class started the teacher called him up and yelled at him about it and asked why he would send something rude to his teacher. He told her he didn't send it. I don't think she believes him but I'm not sure. I am sort of afraid of what will happen to me. I deleted the email account for good and want to know what will happen. Can they find out I did it if I don't tell anyone? And now that the account is deleted am I okay? I don't regret this but Ido t want to get in trouble. Please answer my questions and don't tell me about how it was wrong. I know it was but I don't care.

Why am I so prone to being bullied?
Ok, so im a 16 year old girl and ever since I can remember I have been bullied. It was really hard, got really bad in middle school so my parents started homeschooling me then for high school I went back to school. But it has started getting bad again. I dont know why it always happens to me. I mean i am really sweet and kind and cute. Anyway, I have been getting picked on lately, twice in the past week I have wound up bring sent to the principals office and usually wind up in detention for something I'm being blamed for that I didn't do. I have tried to talk with my counselor about it, but she is being no help. And my parents don't want to homeschool me again because my mom is pregnant with my sister, so she says she can't handle me. And sge works. Anyway what should I do in this situation? It's bothering me but not to b the point of giving up. It is kinda embarrassing when my pregnant mom has to come and pick me up at school because I got in trouble, which happens a lot. I feel bad for her. And don't v suggest changing schools, because there is only one in my area. What do I do, I don't know?!

Imagination help and plot ideas for a novel?
I'm writing a novel for school, in which the main characters are Kendall Kavanough and her two love interests Derek and Liam (need suggestions for their last names as well). An idea was suggested to ''make Kendall a buff and a bit of a bully and disliked''. Also that she would be going through something that causes her hostility and how she is ''crushed by emotions on the inside.'' Derek a bad-boy , ''always be getting into trouble, hanging with the wrong crew'' and the number one love interest for Kendall. Any suggestions about how Logan should be as a character, (I was thinking the good-guy). Also can you please come up with suggestions on how I can put a twist into the story. For instance who Kendall should go for and why? Any ideas will help a lot. You can also suggest even more characters or come up with anything else that can help my story become more interesting and fun to read :)

Questions about homeschooling ?
Well, I'm 17 years old and I think I'm gona start homeschooling or online schooling, what's the difference between them or is there any difference? Anyway, I'm really depressed and have high anxiety and I just can't handle school, night before school I'm always crying and shaking because I'm so scared to go. I usually stay up as late as I can because I never want the morning to come, last year I stopped going to school when I was in the hospital for attempting suicide and I never went back after that, then I started school again this year and everything was fine, and then everything started happening again, I was getting depressed again, started skipping shook, started cutting myself, started having thoughts about suicide again and started doing drugs. And I just can't handle going to school. So my mom said I could start homeschooling, but one of my friends she's kinda depressed too or has anxiety, and her boyfriend was saying how I need to be there for her and how I need to be at school with her, I really want to be there for her because I hate seein her like this but I just can't handle going to school, it's even hard walking down the halls without crying, it's so hard to hold it in. I don't know what to do. Help??

Questions for cyberbulling experts?
Hello, I am looking for cyber bullying experts (can be teachers, professors, authors, etc) anyone who can give me some background on cyberbullying. I am doing an independent research project at my University, and I would like to go more deep into this issue and I was hoping that if I can take some of your time and get some of your perspectives on this issue. I have a total of nine questions to ask in order to get a sense of the different reasons, and different preventive strategies regarding cyber bullying. My study focuses on the current statistics on the incidence and prevalence of cyber bullying, causes of cyber bullying, aspects that distinguish it from cyber bullying, the psychological impact of cyber bullying, existing laws and policies, and effective strategies for addressing cyber bullying. Questions 1. How big is the issue of cyber bullying in the United States (or in your respective country)? 2. Why is cyber bullying so prominent? 3. Advice for students getting cyber bullied? 4. Why do you think kids cyber bully? 5. What do you suggest we do to make this problem better? 6. How can we prevent cyber bullies? 7. Do you think schools should have a responsibility over online harassment? 8.How can schools help bullied victims? 9.What can parents do to help their children?

If its a bullies natural right to pick on victims then isn't it a victims natural right to fight back?
These collectivists are going around saying that you can't pass laws to stop bullying because its natural. So isn't it also wrong to pass laws to prevent the bullies victims from fighting back?

Was I Wrong to Tell my Class He had AIDS?
Before judging me, please read my entire question. This is hard to write, so bare with me. When I was a Junior in high school, I was cast in the school play as one of the lead players. I did a great job and everyone praised me for it. Every show we noticed how the program listed me as second under the female. It was great. One of the newspaper writers, we'll call him Carl, was in charge of writing up a review of the play and also submitting it to the yearbook. When the Yearbooks came out, there was the review and the pictures with me - but when I got to the cast list I noticed I was MISSING! He listed everyone but me. I was devastated. This was the yearbook after all, showcasing what we achieved during the year and he didn't decide to put my name. When I approached him about it, he claimed he didn't realize, he must have "forgotten". I didn't buy it- he listed everyone but me! He still claimed it was a mistake. I never got over it. My parents and friends told me to forget it, that it didn't take away from what I did in the play. But I can't look at that yearbook now and not remember his awful doings. Our 10 year high school reunion was last November. A week before the reunion I noticed Carl was attending, with his fiance no less. I was still bitter towards him. So I did the unthinkable. I posted a viral message on facebook saying he had told me he was gay, and had AIDS. This immediately got around fast- and while some people didn't think he had the disease, most were gossiping about his sexuality- which I made worse by posting constant updates. We came from a very conservative class, and when I saw Carl freaking out and telling everyone it was a lie, I smiled. I showed up at the reunion and everyone was still talking about it. Some people were angry that I had blabbed a lie, but I didn't care. The damage had been done. Carl never showed up and rumor was his fiance dumped him. A week later he sent me a nasty long email saying I had no right to do what I did and that I should have gotten over the past. He also wants to take me to court for harassment. Was I wrong to do this? Look at it from my side. What he did to me was unforgivable. You don't have to believe it- it happened. What he did to me was terrible. @Soc: Your aunt is a lesbian and you look up to her the most, yet you say being gay is worse then murder? You're fucking sick, bytch. Go hang yourself please. This is 2013. Being gay is normal and unless you live under a rock or in a religious cult, it is nothing compared to murder. You belong in jail.
